Roman Numerals

I   = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1000

Rules:
First: write down all of the numbers that the letters stand for
        example:    LDCXXXI  =  50    500    10    10    10    1

Next: find the places where a smaller number comes BEFORE a bigger number and place a B between them (the B stands for BEFORE)
        example: LDCXXXI     = 50 B  500    10    10    10    1

Solve the BEFORES (B's) FIRST
                                                        50 BEFORE 500= 450

Now add everything together
                                                    =  450  +    10  +  10  +  10  +  1  =   481

Sometimes there will be no BEFORES (B's) : You may choose to just add everything together
