Salt Dough Recipe

The Nile River Valley

 

On Wednesday, November 16th, all students will be constructing a map of the Nile River Valley in social studies class. Each student will need to make the salt-dough at home and bring it in for Friday. Here is the recipe:

 

 

Basic Salt Dough Recipe

 

Ingredients:

·         1 cup of table salt- divided

·         1 cup of flour – divided

·         ½ cup of water (may add more)- divided

·         Blue and green food coloring

 

Instructions

·         In a medium bowl, combine the ½ cup salt and ½ cup flour

·         Add about two drops of blue food coloring to ¼ cup of water

·         Make a well in the salt/flour mixture and add the colored water

·         Knead dough until smooth and shape into a ball

·         Store in an air tight container or plastic-zip bag

·         Repeat the directions once more to make green dough using the remaining ingredients

 

Hint: To get a softer dough, you can add more flour. Adding more salt will lend a more ganulous affect.

 

Have fun with this recipe! If each student could also bring in a flat piece of cardboard to make their map on, it would be helful. The cardboard should be sturdy and about the size of a cookie sheet (9”x12”).
